POLAND IS NOT YET LOST

Polish Tree Owen Sound sm

A Polish soldier from The Tadeusz Kosciuszko Polish Army Training Camp in Owen Sound, whose name may never be known, carved his message into a beech tree on Friday, April 17, 1942.  The beech remained as a silent witness even after the property was sold to the Bruce Trail Conservancy in 2003. It was not until 2007 that this tree and its historical significance were discovered. Now, 75 years after the message was left, the beech is nearing the end of its life. A large gaping hole exposes half the trunk to rot and only one strong branch reaches skyward. But this spring the beech will leaf out again.
